Fall...the weather is changing, some things aren't
It's that time of year again in Colorado. The leaves are changing colors, there is often a chill in the air, and most everyone in the state is wearing the favorite fabric of Fall...fleece. This is usually my favorite season, but this Fall something is disrupting my enjoyment of the season. It happens every four years, like the Olympics. But instead of people coming together, something happens that only divides the population even more: political ads! It's barely September and I'm already sick and tired of them. I can't turn on the TV without seeing a candidate berating their opponent. When I turn the channel in an effort to avoid the message, I invariably see the other candidate doing the same thing! Just once I'd like to see a candidate actually convey a positive message with their ideas and how they actually plan to accomplish them. Instead, it seems to be one negative message after another.
Regardless of which candidate wins this November, roughly half the country is not going to be happy with the result. The new President is going to inherit an economy that seems to be stuck in neutral. The mortgage crisis may finally be seeing some light at the end of the tunnel with the government takeover of Freddie Mack and Fannie May....let's hope that light isn't an oncoming train.
I think we are all tired of the sluggish economy, and specifically the extended slowdown our industry has experienced over the last eighteen months or so. Historically the ATE industry has always seen cycles of extended growth interspersed with periods of downturns and contraction. However, our current slowdown is lasting longer than most of thought it would, and there doesn't seem to be too many positive indicators as to when it might end. That being said, there are sectors that are doing quite well. Energy, for example. As our country begins to focus on developing alternative fuels and energy sources that can make economic sense, some companies are capitalizing on the growth opportunity. Those companies that can evolve with a constantly changing marketplace are usually the ones that lead and prosper within their industry.
Whether your particular industry is growing or still stuck in the current economic slowdown, now is a good time to survey the landscape and identify opportunities that may be present, either immediately or in the near future.
